TechnologiesMost windlasses on recreational craft are electric or hydraulic, while ships models are sometimes powered by a pneumatic or internal combustion engine. The motor drives two main parts, the wildcat and the warping-end. The former is a notched wheel that engages the chain links. The latter handles lines.
When the chain and anchor are particularly heavy, the windlass has a stopper in order to keep the chain from slipping when the wildcat is engaged. Most wildcats have a clutch which can be released to let the chain run free while anchoring.
While the rotating drum is usually horizontal, vertical models exist. The motor is often mounted below the deck, especially on leisure vessels. Operation is from a panel or a hand-held device, either wired or a remote control. Double windlasses can handle two mooring lines.
Chain diameter and anchor weight must be considered when selecting a windlass. Whether horizontal or vertical, configuration should ensure that the chain or line falls into the stowage locker without encountering obstacles or sharp angles.
