How to choose this product

A boat windlass is a manual ratchet or powered winch intended to facilitate handling anchors and its associated ground tackle.
Applications
Such devices are indispensable on vessels over 10 or 12 meters long because the weight of the chain and anchor can no longer be lifted by hand, save with the help of numerous crew.
Technologies
Windlasses have a drum, or warping head around which the mooring line is rolled, and mechanisms to increase purchase. Some have a motor. Most are stainless steel or anodized aluminum. The drum's rotational axis, horizontal or vertical, will depend on the configuration of the vessel's bow roller, chain locker and foredeck. Some models are recessed into the deck. Vertical windlasses are more properly referred to as capstans.
How to choose
The weight of the boat and the combined weight of the anchor and chain will determine the required power. Recreational craft generally have windlasses rated at 300 to 2500 watts. Verify that the vessel's electrical system is the same voltage as the windlass, usually 12 or 24 V. The most powerful models run on 220- or even 380-volt power, and require a generator set. The wildcat, or chainwheel must be suitable for the size of the chain links.
