Rope, or cordage is referred to as line aboard a vessel. It is available in a vast array of laid and braided versions for use as sheets, halyards and a variety of other purposes.
ApplicationsNautical line has a wide variety of uses. Sheets, halyards, downhauls and the like control sails. It is also employed for mooring, standing rigging and with block and tackle, for example to lower lifeboats into the water, among innumerable other purposes.
TechnologiesMaritime lines are made of hemp or other natural fibers, or of synthetic fibers. The latter, extremely strong and lightweight, have largely replaced plant fibers in cordage manufacture. The latter are now found almost exclusively aboard retro or vintage craft.
Common materials include polyester, polyamide, polypropylene and a large number of trademarked names. These include Dyneema®, Vectran® and Spectra®, each with specific stretch, load and UV-resistant characteristics. Manufacturers generally specify the appropriate uses for their products.
Synthetic cordage consists of a core and a sheath. The core gives the line its mechanical properties. The sheath, often polyester, provides handling comfort and protects the line against chafing, UV rays and other external dangers.
Choice will depend on the line's function, whether for mooring, sheet, halyard or another use. Vessel and/or sail size will determine proper line diameter, material and the possible need for sheathing. Varying line color with function can facilitate identification and handling.
