A capstan is an electric or hydraulic windlass designed to take up slack on a vessel's mooring lines or hawsers.
ApplicationsThis gear is particularly useful on vessels whose displacement makes it difficult to tension mooring lines by hand, including freighters and other ships, yachts and mega-yachts. However, they are increasingly found on small powerboats for the convenience they provide.
TechnologiesThe mooring line is wound around a vertical drum as the capstan turns, tightening the line. It is usually electrically or hydraulically powered. Capstans on large ships can be over a meter in diameter.
How to chooseChoice will depend primarily on available space and required power. There must be sufficient room beneath the capstan for the motor and accompanying mechanism. Vessel displacement, including cargo, will determine power needs. Other factors include selection of an electric or hydraulic model. The former avoids the need to install a dedicated hydraulic pump, reservoir and lines on a vessel lacking such a system.
