How to choose this product
A hydraulic capstan is a mechanical device consisting of a vertical drum powered by a hydraulic motor. The rotating drum is used to handle hawsers and mooring lines of a ship or a yacht. It differs from a windlass in that it is vertical and has no wildcat or gypsy, the indented wheel designed to hold the links of an anchor chain.
This equipment is found on all types of vessel where mooring lines are too heavy for manual handling, generally ships and large yachts.
The capstan drum usually rotates around a vertical shaft. On yachts, the motor is often hidden under the deck, while on ships it sits on deck, beneath the drum. It may use a vessel's central hydraulic system or be fitted with its own.
Some have variable speed, for both slow, precise maneuvers and rapid line handling in emergency situations. Yacht models usually have cleaner, more carefully conceived lines than those found on merchant vessels.
How to choose
Choice will depend on the capstan's size, its location on deck and the diameter of the line or chain to be handled.
