Intervention ROVs (remotely operated vehicle) are underwater robots designed for a variety of tasks at great depth.

Applications

From military operations to oil platform inspection, the range of possible uses is broad and varied. Activities include storage tank and pipeline inspection, aquaculture and site surveillance.

Technologies

These vehicles can reach extreme depths beyond 2500 meters, and must be designed to withstand great ambient pressure. Most are built of stainless steel and plastics. They move on caterpillar tracks or are propelled by thrusters. Power is supplied via a cable from the surface or on-board batteries.

Such ROVs are equipped with video cameras, sensors and articulated arms holding tools for drilling, cutting chains, cables or lines, MRI, pliers, pumps and/or coring or other sediment-sampling gear.

How to choose

Formulate precise, exhaustive specifications for the operations to be performed by the ROV. Determine required maximum operating depth and the nature of the surface support vessel.
