How to choose this product

An inboard engine is installed in a special compartment within a boat's hull. In contrast, an outboard motor is mounted on the transom, outside the hull.
Technologies
These engines are usually installed at the bottom of the hull on flexible supports designed to absorb movement and impact. A propeller shaft conveys rotary motion from the engine to the propeller. A stuffing box ensures watertightness where the shaft passes through the hull. Other transmission systems include stern drive, surface drive and V-drive.
How to choose
The designer indicates a power range within which the vessel is certified to operate. Too small an engine will often operate beyond its optimum speed, causing excess fuel consumption. This also increases maintenance costs. An overly powerful engine must be used with caution, depending on sea state, to avoid structural damage to the craft. Matching transmission type and characteristics to the engine is another important factor.
