How to choose this product
A bow or stern thruster is a motor facilitating the lateral movement a boat or a ship while maneuvering in port.
These devices can constitute an important aid to maneuvering either sailboats or powerboats longer than about 12 meters. Azimuth pod units and similar systems are often found on large ships. Thrusters are also useful on boats with propellers of significant pitch or with top hamper likely to hinder maneuvering in port.
Thrusters can be mounted in a tunnel that traverses the hull or in a retractable pod which drops vertically from the vessel's bottom when in use. The latter system maintains the hull's hydrodynamic qualities when the thruster is retracted, while the tunnel causes turbulence.
This section also includes other auxiliary propulsion including kites and hybrid systems.
How to choose
Choice will depend on motor type, hydraulic or electric, as a function of vessel configuration and equipment. Large ships usually use an internal combustion engine. Thruster location is another factor: bow, stern or both. Vessel displacement and top hamper will determine minimum power needs.
