A portlight consists of a frame and a fixed or movable glass pane inserted into an opening in a vessel's hull to supply light. Models that open also provide aeration. Those set into the deck are usually called decklights or deck prisms.
ApplicationsThese devices are found on all types of decked craft including ships, yachts and recreational power and sailing craft.
TechnologiesPortlights can be round, square, rectangular or oval. There are even custom-made versions. Some include a plastic cover for the interior to improve aesthetics. The size depends on the nature of the craft. The main goal is to ensure strength and watertightness. The pane is therefore extremely sturdy. The frame, of aluminum, stainless steel or bronze, is attached to the hull with numerous screws and/or polyurethane adhesives.
Non-opening portlights, or deadlights are installed near the waterline, where they are exposed to waves. Others swing or slide open. A flexible, watertight neoprene seal runs around the edge of the frame.
The pane is usually of poly(methyl methacrylate), commonly known as Plexiglas, and is sometimes tinted. Thickness is proportional to size following rules established by Lloyd's, MCA or a similar organization or national maritime authority as a function of vessel type and portlight location.
Verify compliance with regulations governing the vessel before installation. Portlight design and dimensions should harmonize with similar fittings and the rest of the vessel.
