TechnologiesHatches usually consist of an anodized aluminum frame and a hinged or sliding panel. The panel can be tinted Plexiglas, bronze, blue or some other color. Opaque models are often teak or gel-coat to match the deck. Handles allow the hatch to be locked from the inside to prevent leaks or unauthorized entry. They can protrude above deck level or be flush-mounted, a more attractive option.
How to chooseA transparent model is recommended for cabins or similar areas, while an opaque hatch is more suitable for the chain locker or engine compartment. A flush-mounted hatch is best on a flushdeck vessel. Deck plan will influence choice of hinged or sliding hatches.
