A stern light is white light that shines aft of the vessel's stern. Its range depends upon intensity, and is stipulated in the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).
ApplicationsNavigation lights are mandatory and extremely useful when sailing at night. A visible white stern light tells us that there is another vessel up ahead.
TechnologiesStern lights are located aft, on the boat's longitudinal axis, and must be visible through 135°. Vessels overs 50 meters long must show a stern light with a range of three nautical miles. Below 50 meters, the light must be visible from at least two nautical miles away.
How to chooseThe vessel's length will determine the light's minimum range in accordance with regulations.
