Your suggestions for improvement:
A sailboat boom vang is a device connecting the boom to the foot of the mast.
ApplicationsBoom vangs are necessary on all types of sailboat, from sailing dinghies to live-aboards. It is particularly useful on racers because it allows fine-tuning the mainsail by adjusting leech tension.
TechnologiesThere are two types of boom vang.
- Ordinary vangs consist of a multi-sheave block and tackle whose lower block has a jam cleat. It is used to adjust leech tension, but does not support the boom when the sail is not exerting upward force (reefing, hoisting, handing, etc.).
- The rigid vang's pneumatic or hydraulic piston supplements the block and tackle and, especially, supports the boom when the sail is no longer doing the work. This function is adjustable manually or mechanically (e.g., hydraulically).
This system is more convenient than the use of a topping lift to support the boom when reefing, hoisting or handing the mainsail.
