How to choose this product

A navigation light is visible from a great distance. Its color and position indicate vessel type, course and speed to nearby craft in order to avoid collisions.

Applications

These lights are required on all vessels sailing at night. Their number, color and placement vary with vessel category, e.g., ships over 50 meters, sailboats over or under 12 meters, tugboats or trawlers. These regulations are defined by the Convention on International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG 72).

Technologies

Lights differ by their placement and the angle through which they must be visible. For instance, vessels must show a red light to port and a green light to starboard, each visible through 120°, as well as white stern light with 180° visibility, or 360° on a motor vessel. Boats of less than 12 meters can carry a single, tri-color light.

Both traditional filament and LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs are used. The latter consume much less electricity and last much longer, but are more expensive and are visible over a shorter distance.

How to choose

The first criterion is compliance with COLREG 72. The precise type of vessel, its dimensions and intended use are the determining factors. The choice between filament and LED bulbs will depend on budget and the capacity of the vessel's electrical system. Only approved models can be used as navigation lights.
