ApplicationsVery useful for returning to the deck easily after swimming, such ladders are indispensable for climbing back on board wearing dive gear. They are recommended for boats whose architecture does not allow easy access to the sea. They also can be used for rescue purposes.
TechnologiesMost models are made of stainless steel, sometimes with rot-proof wooden treads, and are telescopic or folding. Hydraulic and electric models can be deployed and folded away with the simple touch of a button. Some are designed for transom mounting, while others are used with "beach club" platforms on motor yachts.
How to chooseThe minimum number of steps will depend on the distance from the deck to the water. There should be at least two additional treads beneath the surface to facilitate climbing back aboard. The stowage system, whether folding or telescopic, should be suitable for the vessel. For power models, there must be enough space for the electric or hydraulic mechanism. Verify that the on-board electrical system is powerful enough.
