A swivel is an articulated fitting, often metal, for connecting elements that must be able to rotate independently around their junction point.
ApplicationsSwivel shackles connect anchors to their chains so that the vessel can swing around the anchor without twisting the chain or pulling out the anchor, and to permit the anchor to turn when being dropped or weighed without twisting the chain.
Swivel pulleys allow lines to be oriented for optimal effort thanks to the freedom of movement afforded by the swivel. Halyard ends also can be fitted with swivels. This is particularly important on racing sailboats with roller furling gear.
While there are plastic models suitable for dinghies and other small craft, most swivels are made of galvanized or stainless steel.
