OverviewStructured Luff Downwind is a downwind sail combining a structured leading-edge lens with a conventional soft trailing section. It was developed to provide reliable downwind operations while improving performance at narrow apparent wind angles typical of modern Grand Prix and Maxi-class race yachts.
MIKE SANDERSON SHARES THE DEVELOPMENT –“I had been scratching my head trying to figure out how to transition into a narrower apparent wind type of sail without losing the conventional abilities to do string drops, peels, standard gybes, regular packing and so on.” The resulting concept places a Structured Luff lens at the leading edge that progressively morphs into a soft sail toward the leech, preserving standard handling techniques.
THE STRUCTURED LUFF EVOLUTIONThe design uses a structural Stratis material in the forward section transitioning to off-the-shelf polyester further aft, delivering a more balanced load distribution across the sail. This approach addresses the performance gap when yachts sail at apparent wind angles around 50–55° where traditional nylon or polyester-only spinnakers can struggle.
