How to choose this product

A sail can power all types of vessel. Whatever its surface area and material, its functional principles remain the same, whether propelling a super-yacht, a sailing dinghy or a windsurfer. The various categories include headsail, mainsail and spinnaker, this last used for downwind sailing.
Applications
Sails are hoisted along a mast or a stay and are adjusted to take advantage of the airflow, laminar or turbulent, over their surfaces. To optimize efficiency and speed, sail size and power must be suited to vessel characteristics, including righting moment. An over- or under-powered sailboat is more difficult to handle.
Technologies
Traditional sails were often square, but modern mainsails and headsails are triangular, the three corners labeled the head, the tack and the clew. Battening a mainsail ensures better shape and enables the creation of flat-top sails. Polyester (Dacron®), carbon, Mylar® and other synthetics are now used by sailmakers instead of the traditional cotton. Advanced sewing and gluing methods help create high-performance sails.
How to choose
Mast characteristics will greatly influence choice of sails.
