A waist harness is kite- or windsurfing gear that spreads the pull of the wing or sail around the rider's pelvis. It offers more freedom of movement than a seat harness, while the latter uses crotch straps to lower and better distribute the load.
ApplicationsSuch harnesses can be used for any type of kite- or windsurfing, but are best suited to freestyle and other "physical" styles requiring great freedom of movement. The forces exerted are mostly horizontal. In contrast, seat harnesses are used where the pull is vertical, such as when the kite is directly overhead. Waist harnesses are less suitable for beginners than seat models, which offer better back support.
TechnologiesThese devices consist of a foam belt covered with neoprene, polyurethane or similar fabric. Reinforcements strengthen the harness and a front hook connects it to the kite or sail. Kitesurf models are equipped with a rear fitting to hold the leash connecting the rider to the board. Some models have pockets, a built-in knife or other features.
How to chooseSince windsurfing harnesses are slightly different from kitesurfing models, choice will depend on the sport to be engaged in. Other factors include the rider's age, size and sex. The harness must fit the user's body perfectly .
