ApplicationsTwintip boards are particularly easy for beginners to use. Experienced riders favor short, light boards for executing freestyle maneuvers. Some ride without foot straps, skateboard style, while others use a skimboard in the same way. Freeride, or long-distance riding, requires a longer, more stable directional board with or without straps, the latter preferred by purists.
TechnologiesAll such boards are made with composite materials over a foam or wood core. Twintips have small fins for better purchase on the water. Directional boards can have one, three or four fins, depending on whether they are used for wave, speed or freeride.
How to chooseChoice will depend on finding a good compromise among several elements: rider morphology, kite size, level of experience and expected water and wind conditions. Beginners will find it easier to learn on a large twintip board of 150 centimeters or longer. This facilitates kite control. Very small, low-displacement boards remain afloat without capsizing thanks only to the lift of the kite, especially in light winds.
