Radar is a system for detecting hard or dense objects within a defined perimeter around a vessel. It emits electromagnetic waves and displays their echo from the objects on a screen.
ApplicationsThis device is particularly useful for sailing in the fog, at night or along busy sea lanes such as those along the coasts of Gibraltar, Ouessant and Finisterre. It is found on all ships, as well as on offshore recreational cruising vessels. Radar also can detect dense squalls, and some are designed to indicate oil spills. In addition, the coastguard uses it to monitor the movements of suspect vessels.
TechnologiesRadar consists of a rotating antenna, sometimes housed in a radome, and a screen which displays a graphic representation of the echoes. The screen can be a CRT, LCD or LED model. Certain multifunction systems display chart plots, video images and other information on the same screen.
Ships carry powerful units, sometimes combined with an ECDIS system. Some models include a mini automatic radar plotting aid function (MARPA) to track a specific target and display its course, speed and similar information.
Power, usually expressed in watts, will determine the unit's range and discrimination at long distance. Antenna size is proportional to power. A military vessel will carry far different radar than that found on leisure craft. Screen size varies; the display can be color or monochromatic.
