A blue-water liferaft is a small, self-inflating boat ensuring the survival of shipwreck victims awaiting rescue after abandoning a vessel.
ApplicationsThese rafts are carried aboard vessels sailing far offshore.
TechnologiesThe raft consists of a square, round or hexagonal insulated floor supported by inflatable PVC or Hypalon® pontoons. The raft is protected from sun, rain and waves by a small, flexible tent. A fabric ladder facilitates climbing aboard from the sea. Seawater ballast compartments reduce the chance of capsize.
Interior pockets hold fish hooks and lines, knives, food, water, survival manuals, distress flares, signaling mirror and other useful gear. A compressed air cylinder automatically inflates the raft. These liferafts, stowed in watertight bags or rigid containers, must be inspected periodically by a qualified professional.
Each raft is designed to carry a specific number of passengers. At a minimum, this should correspond to the number of persons the main vessel is certified to carry. Safety at sea regulations vary from country to country. Consult the relevant authorities of the vessel's country of registration.
