TechnologiesThe compass needle pivots around the center of a circle, the compass card, or rose, whose circumference is divided into 360 degrees. The 0° mark indicates north, 90°, east, etc. The compass may be dry or wet. In dry models, the needle is mounted so as to minimize friction. In wet models, the rose is immersed in a solution of distilled water and alcohol.
On merchant ships, the compass sits in a binnacle, a housing containing magnets to correct for the disturbance of the earth's magnetic field by the vessel's ferrous and electrical elements. Installation and correction of a magnetic compass on a merchant ship must be done by an expert.
It must be remembered that magnetic north does not coincide with geographic north, and that the earth's magnetic field varies from area to area around the globe. Some models can display compass readings on the radar screen or integrated bridge instrument systems.
