Your suggestions for improvement:
A gyrocompass is a navigational instrument which indicates geographic north. In contrast to a magnetic compass it is not subject to magnetic deviation or declination. However, because its proper functioning depends on the earth’s rotation, it must be calibrated periodically to compensate for apparent precession.
ApplicationsSuch devices are primarily used aboard large commercial or military vessels. Particularly fast craft require use of a suitable model of gyrocompass because rapid changes in speed, latitude and course can affect accuracy.
How to chooseThese devices are designed for professional use on ships. Since they constitute required equipment aboard vessels over a certain size, market price tends to remain stable.
However, the vessel’s maximum speed must be taken into consideration.
- Immune to declination and deviation
- No electromagnetic interference
- Subject to apparent precession
- Requires electric power
- Cannot be used at high cruising speeds
