Your suggestions for improvement:
Halyard rope is made using any of the different materials and manufacturing techniques suitable for line designed to raise and lower sails.
ApplicationsHalyards are indispensable for raising and lowering sails on every sailboat.
TechnologiesA host of different materials is used for line manufacture. Halyard cordage should not stretch or deteriorate from UV exposure, should have great load-bearing capacity, be light and comfortable to handle. Polyester, Dyneema®, Vectran®, Spectra® and similar fibers meet these requirements.
This cordage consists of a core, sometimes sheathed. While polyester is usually used for the jacket, with various colors available to differentiate lines running through a multi-line clutch, the core can be of any of these materials.
On racing sailboats, halyards are unsheathed (single braid) where they run up the mast, and sheathed at chafe and fastening points such as blocks, cleats and clutches. A halyard rove through a masthead block must be sheathed. Traditional vessels are fitted with halyards of laid hemp or polyester made to resemble hemp.
Halyard length should be about 2.5 times mast height. Cordage price varies with specifications and characteristics. Polyester is suitable for cruising sailboats, but racers should consider investing in high-tech materials for better performance. Line diameter must be adequate for sail weight and match that of coachroof clutches.
