An anchor chain consists of a series of interlocking metal links forming a flexible, articulated line between the ship and the anchor. It absorbs the pull of the moored vessel. In may cases the chain is attached to an extension line which is sometimes weighted.
While most are found aboard vessels, anchor chains are also used to moor platforms, buoys, and other gear.
Chain links are sometimes reinforced by a central stud. They are made from galvanized or stainless steel in a wide variety of sizes. A bow or swivel shackle connects the chain to the anchor. There are both short and long links. The latter are lighter and more flexible, but are weaker.
The chain must withstand the traction of the vessel or floating object it moors. Therefore, the weight of the object will determine the chain, or link diameter. If the boat has a windlass, chain diameter must match gypsy specifications. Chain length will depend on water depth and weather conditions at the mooring site. Wind and swell are the main causes of link breakage.
