Overview- Acts as a chain/rope downforce weight (sentinel/kellet).
- Improves anchoring security and reduces yawing while at anchor.
- Softens chain movement in strong gusts and increases comfort.
- Can also be used as an anchor recovery device (save/trip device).
- Provides a chance to recover an anchor jammed in rocky ground.
1 - Chain / Rope Downforce WeightIf you must anchor on a short scope, lower the ULTRA Anchor Ring onto the chain to increase holding. When boats are anchored close together the ring reduces the swinging radius. In strong gusts the weighted chain rises more gradually, creating a shock-absorbing effect that reduces loads on both anchor and boat and improves comfort. If wind strength exceeds the ring's effectiveness, switch to a longer scope. Rule of thumb: multiply depth by the Beaufort number to estimate a safe longer scope.
2 - Anchor RecoveryAvoid anchoring on rocky ground if possible. If unavoidable, fit a recovery line and buoy to the anchor before dropping it. If the anchor is stuck and diving is not possible, the ULTRA Anchor Ring can sometimes assist recovery by applying downward force and enabling controlled pulling attempts; however diving often remains the definitive solution.
Rope DetailThe rope should be thicker than the minimum needed to carry the ring so a stuck anchor can be pulled free and to prevent hand injuries when lowering or hauling. Recommended minimum rope diameters: UAR27 ≥ 8 mm; UAR45 ≥ 10 mm; UAR80 ≥ 12 mm. Rope length should be slightly shorter than the water depth to avoid the ring dragging on the bottom or wrapping around the chain. The UL-D 40/130 bow reel is the most practical option when available; alternatively bring the stern reel forward or use a separate rope meeting the diameter and length recommendations.
Usage Notes- Used as a sentinel/kellet to improve holding on short scopes.
- Reduces swinging radius in crowded anchorages.
- Provides some shock absorption in gusts; not a substitute for longer scope in strong winds.
- Can increase chances of recovering an anchor stuck in rocks, though diving remains the definitive solution in many cases.
