Spar buoys are suited for marking breaking seas. These buoys are designed to have the minimum area exposed to the swell and also a low buoyancy reserve so that they can sink in a wave with a minimum load to the mooring system. Its torpedo shape helps maintain a minimum resistance to the power of a wave.
