Your suggestions for improvement:
A winch is a mechanism which increases mechanical advantage for raising or trimming sails. Diameter and gearing vary with the size of the vessel and the forces in play. Many winches offer several speeds. Some are electric or hydraulic.
ApplicationsThese devices are used to raise and trim sails. Location on board varies depending on whether they will handle sheets or halyards.
TechnologiesThe line is wrapped around the cylindrical winch drum. The gears within increase mechanical advantage. Ratios range from 1:5 to 1:120 for the biggest models. The winch is operated manually using a handle or is turned by an electric motor or a hydraulic system, for the most sophisticated models.
The line held on the drum will not slip if sufficient tension is maintained. This makes it easy to sheet in. On self-tailing winches, tension is maintained by sliding the line into a slot, or jaw at the top of the drum.
Choice will depend on line diameter, maximum load and whether the winch will be manual, electric or hydraulic.
- Provides great mechanical advantage
- Risk of fouling
- Location must be planned in advance
