A sea anchor is a fabric "parachute" designed to slow and direct a boat's drift for security or comfort. Lines should be 10 to 15 times the length of the boat when streaming the anchor astern.
ApplicationsIn a storm, the sea anchor can change the boat's orientation with respect to oncoming seas, reducing the risk of capsize. By slowing the boat's surfing action, it can also reduce the risk of burying the bow. On liferafts, it reduces drift, keeping the raft closer to the point of embarkation, and helps prevent capsizing. It can also be useful when fishing, in order to control drift as a function of the fishing ground.
TechnologiesThis anchor resembles a parachute made of fabric, such as nylon, whose shape allows it to fill with water, thus reducing the boat's drift. Its mouth can be held open by a rigid frame, preventing it from twisting itself closed. The sea anchor rides at shallow depth. Snagging on the bottom is likely to destroy it.
How to chooseThe boat's size and weight will determine the choice of sea anchor. If undersized, it will be ineffective. If too large, it can become a danger to the boat or be damaged.
