ApplicationsMost compressors are found at dive centers, clubs and commercial dive companies. Portable models are suitable for private use. Some are designed for installation aboard yachts, dive boats and research vessels. Others are direct surface-supply units for commercial diving, recreation or hull work below the waterline.
TechnologiesThese devices draw in, filter and compress ambient air to fill scuba tanks. The air is dried during the process, helping to protect tanks from corrosion. Compressors may be fixed or portable, and vary greatly in their compression capabilities.
Some are designed to supply air to the diver directly from the surface. These can be mounted on the deck of a boat or on a float accompanying one or more divers. The latter are battery-powered, limiting the length of the dive to battery discharge time. Mixed-gas compressors deliver nitrox or another predetermined blend for specialized applications.
Choice will depend on compressor fill capabilities (maximum pressure, fill speed), the need for a fixed or portable model, and whether for scuba or surface-supplied diving. Certain types are designed for installation aboard a vessel.
