Boots are designed to keep a sailor's feet dry and warm. They also must have a non-slip sole.
ApplicationsWhile they are used by sailors the world over, boots are particularly common among racing and fishing boat crews, and those whose work exposes them to spray and cold.
TechnologiesAs with other clothing, boots are the object of continual research and development in an attempt to find the ideal material. Manufacturers jealously guard the secrets of their patented discoveries. Today's technologies offer models that are both waterproof and breathable, providing maximum comfort. Natural or synthetic rubber is the principal material, though high-end versions are sometimes of leather.
Certain boots are lined with polar fleece or a similar material for added warmth. Height varies. Some models have watertight seals at the top to prevent the entry of even the smallest amount of water. As with deck shoes, the soles are non-slip for safety.
In addition to size, choice will depend on constituent materials. Leather is extremely durable and offers great thermal comfort, but requires particular care after being doused in seawater. In contrast, rubber needs little care, but can lose its waterproof qualities after several years.
