Your suggestions for improvement:
A boat log measures the speed of the vessel through the water.
ApplicationsThese devices are particularly useful on sailboats for dead reckoning, racing, sail trim and measuring the speed of currents via comparison with the GPS speed. On power vessels, they can be used to avoid exceeding speed limits in designated areas.
TechnologiesA rotating paddle wheel or an ultrasound sensor is attached to the hull bottom. It sends data to an analog guage with a needle or a digital LCD screen. Some versions are wireless, including those featuring wristband displays.
How to chooseAnalog dials lack accuracy at low-to-moderate speeds, making them less suitable for sailboats. Log readout is often one element of a multifunction console.
Using instruments of the same brand will facilitate communication among the depth sounder, GPS, autopilot, anemometer and other devices. Otherwise, the log should be compatible with NMEA standard 183 or, better yet, 2000. Matching the log readout design to the rest of the instrument cluster on a power boat also should be considered.
