A boat freezer is an appliance designed to store food at a temperature below -18° C (0.4° F) aboard leisure craft.
These devices are very useful on long cruises and visits to remote areas where re-provisioning is impossible. They are also considered necessary on yachts requiring all the comforts of home.
Freezers create cold by the rapid liquid-gas phase change of a previously compressed refrigerant. There are many different sizes, including both top- and front-opening models. Some have ice makers, while others serve as combination refrigerator/freezers.
How to choose
Choice will depend on available installation space, power requirements and voltage (12, 24, 110 or 220), number of crew and length of voyage. An oversized model wastes energy. Noise can also be a factor.
