As every rudder stock is different, we always produce them to the specific customer requirements. In general the designer of the yacht specifies the material and dimensions. We can be of assistance if a calculation for a different material is required or if the design has to be modified for a more economic production. In a lot of cases designers draw a rudder shaft with a maximum diameter rounded off to a full figure (i.e. Ø 70, Ø 80, Ø 90,etc mm). It could be that the calculated diameter is 2 mm less. This is a very costly round off that is completely unnecessary: To achieve a high tolerance surface of Ø 90 mm we would need to use a 100 mm solid bar profile. If the diameter of the rudder stock would be 88 mm, we could use a 90 mm solid bar profile. As the price of bar material goes up exponentially with the diameter, one can save a lot of money by acquiring the exact calculated diameter from the designer.

RUDDER POSTS
Rudder posts can be ordered individually or with blade and bearing assembly.
Each rudder post consists of a hand-wound, custom designed shaft of uni-directional carbon tape thermally step-cured over aluminum mandrels.
Composite bearing journals are bonded to the shaft and turned to the desired diameters. Shafts can be either round or rhomboid shaped for flatter profile. All shafts are engineered to customer requirements and ABS standards where applicable.

RUDDER ASSEMBLIES WITH BLADE
Rudder components can be assembled at our factory with a custom designed CNC machine rudder blade. The blade generally consists of a ribbed, foam core substrate covered with precisely engineered layers of carbon and glass epoxy. The finished blade is primed and ready to paint.
We provide and install bearing races, bearings, shaft seals, tiller plugs and a bearing housing tube ready for installation into the hull and glassing in-place.
We can also incorporate additional features such as a kelp-cutter.

Four models of classical carbon steering wheels are available in many diameters:
3 spokes (new TRANSAT series): diameter mm 900 or mm 1000.
5 spokes (AMERICA'S CUP series): from diameter mm 900 up to mm 1200.
6 spokes (AMERICA'S CUP series): from diameter mm 1400 up to mm 1800.
Y spokes (new ADMIRAL series): from diameter mm 1100 up to mm 1700.
The steering hub connection is cylindrical diameter mm. 25 or conical. The finishing is carbon fibre on view with transparent paint cover. All the wheels are built mixing carbon fibre and Kevlar. In this way we maximize strength, but the structure is not fragile; it means that we assure the right safety for our customers.

Edson’s newest carbon yacht wheel is the lightest weight production carbon wheel on the market. Weighing a mere 3.5lbs (1.5kg), the Edson ProSeries Carbon Wheel features a unique forked tri-spoke design, superb strength and fingertip sensitivity. Available from 36” (900mm) to 48” (1200mm), they are fabricated in carbon fibre using one piece monocoque construction — making them super strong and super light. The high gloss clear coat finish over carbon fabric weave yields a hi-tech look that compliments both a Grand Prix racer and a Superyacht

The standard Jefa steering wheels are produced in stainless steel 316 and cover a range from 600 mm to 1200 mm overall diameter in steps of 100 mm. The standard wheels up to 900 mm contain 5 tapered spokes, above 900 mm diameter the wheels contain 7 tapered spokes. The hub is made in one part and constructed on an ingenious way, so no welding of the spokes is visible at the outside. Jefa steering has chosen to use as standard a thicker diameter rim of 25 mm in stead of the industry standard of 22 mm. The standard wheels are available as polished version and covered with leather. All standard wheels are CE approved. Please click on the picture for a larger view.
