The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A sea kayak is designed for ocean use. It is propelled using a double-bladed paddle.
These craft can be used for beach camping trips, day outings or even for surfing. Intended use will determine the appropriate weight, performance characteristics and additional features.
Models are differentiated by intended use, be it day trips or overnight camping. Since the sea is usually rougher than inland waters, these craft are designed to handle chop and to slide off swells. They usually feature a high, straight stem to facilitate passage through waves.
Touring models are often built of composites to save weight and increase stiffness. They can carry tents and other camping gear, clothing, food and water in specially designed compartments. The rudder and, especially, the skeg are essential to counter drift. Some have a built-in compass for more precise navigation.
Long sea trips require a more sophisticated model. Sit-on-top polyethylene kayaks are perfect for just having fun. Folding versions are easier to transport.
