An open motor yacht is a powerboat measuring between 15 and 30 meters long with an open hull offering significant exterior space.
These vessels usually have several cabins making them suitable for coastal and near-shore cruising, including chartering. The open cockpit layout makes them ideal for use in temperate or hot climates.
Most have composite fiberglass hulls, though all the other typical construction materials are also used. The extensive cockpit is on one level with an exterior saloon or one covered by a hard-top or flybridge. The helm is usually in this area, near the companionway leading below deck.
Despite the "open" designation, these vessels are usually decked and have cabins, a saloon, galley, engine compartment and other below-decks space. They can be powered by diesel, electric, gasoline or hybrid engines. Transmission can be Z-drive, pod, propeller shaft or another system.
Intended use will favor speed or relaxed cruising. Fuel consumption varies directly with performance characteristics. Most countries require a boating permit to operate such craft. The largest versions may require a professional crew.
