ApplicationsThese instruments are especially useful for technical, deep-water and low-light diving, for extended excursions and for underwater archaeologists and other researchers. They are both useful tools and an additional piece of safety gear.
TechnologiesDigital models generally are integrated into dive computers, which also indicate depth, time, decompression stops and, in some cases, tank pressure. Analog versions function like any other compass, with a magnetized needle and a 360° compass rose in a liquid to reduce friction and, thus, error.
They can be worn on the wrist or attached to a BC, another piece of gear or mounted in a console. Some can be read through a window in the side of the housing, making it easier to follow a course and eliminating inaccuracy due to tilting the rose.
Digital compasses integrated into a dive computer unite all essential instrumentation in one unit, but are dependent on the proper functioning of batteries and electronics. Analog models are independent and reliable in any circumstance.
