The Young 85 was commissioned as a day charter catamaran capable of carrying up to 100 day passengers. The main concept was to provide a stunning looking vessel first and foremost that would attract client bookings as well as being genuinely high performance so the clients get to experience real sailing. Even though the vessel has been governed down to 50% of what it could be capable of, its performance is still quite remarkable.
The vessel also had to provide food preparation areas and a huge BARBQ area so the crew could feed the clients throughout the day. The main saloon is massive and was the first Young design to feature the unique inside/outside concept, being onboard is a lot of fun with many different seating areas and interactive spaces that can handle any weather and social situation.
Tsunami (now renamed Camira) was beautifully built by Vaudrey Miller yachts in Auckland and was launched in 2004. Inline with its day charter requirement of minimal crew and safe operating systems the Young 85 features the latest systems for mainsail and headsail sheeting. The skipper can control every sailing function with push button controls. The mainsheet is safely located on the cabin top and the jib sheet features a vertical sheet so passenger safety is maximised.
