SHINKAI 6500 is a manned deep submergence research vehicle which is capable of diving to 6,500 meters.
Built by MHI Group’s Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, SHINKAI 6500 was delivered to its owner, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), in 1989. Ever since, the vehicle has engaged in the research of the seafloor topography and geology, and deep-sea organisms in the seas around Japan as well as in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. SHINKAI 6500 underwent a major upgrade in March 2012 to enhance its movements, such as turning, acceleration and braking performance. It has completed over 1,500 dives as of August 2017 and continues to play a vital part in the world's deep-sea research.
