Description

MEYER WERFT, based in Papenburg, delivered the 40.000-BRT cruise ship Crown Odyssey to Royal Cruise Line, Piräus, in 1988. The construction of this ocean giant took about one and a half years. The keel-laying took place on April 30th 1987. On November 1st 1987 she was floating for the first time in the newly roofed building dock. The ship was christened on Mai 14th 1988 by Irene Panagopoulos Tsangridis, daughter of Royal Cruise Line CEO’s P.S. Panagopoulos.
Due to the fact that that the Crown Odyssey was completed within the roofed building dock, which has a length of 258 m, she was the first cruise ship at MEYER WERFT to be equipped regardless of weather conditions. At the same time, the construction of the next passenger ship could be initiated.
The cruise ship was later renamed to Norwegian Crown. Today the ship belongs to the shipping company Fred. Olsen Cruise Line and is called Balmoral.
