Contaminants in the form of sand, dust, chips, rust, and salts, for example, cause severe problems in lubricant and hydraulic oil systems. In particular, however, water in the oil has a negative effect on the service life of system components.Water enters the system through condensation of humidity, due to leaking oil coolers or defective stuffing boxes, and endangers its function.The water content directly reduces the lubricating capacity of the oil: indirectly, it provides the deciding factor for the growth of microorganisms, because microorganisms can reproduce in the lubricant if the water concentration exceeds a certain level. The products of their metabolism reduce the pH value, and thus lead to corrosion in tanks and system components. Clogging of lubricating and hydraulic oil systems is a further effect. Microorganisms are thus often the root cause of problems that occur. It is therefore necessary to keep the oil in the best possible condition, and to continuously separate out water and particulate material.
The OTS and OFWA oil care systems, developed by MAHLE especially for this application, combine the required absolute filtration with a highly effective water separator, and can be used either in the bypass or main line.
