ApplicationsAlthough the practice has fallen into disuse, some clocks still have their four first seconds painted red, indicating what used to be the precise duration of a distress signal.
The three minutes following the 15- and 45-minute marks were painted red to remind radio operators that silence had to be kept at those times to listen for emergency messages. Some models also featured green markings after the hour mark and half-hour marks, indicating periods for listening on new frequencies.
Such analog clocks have hands indicating the hour and minute. The internal mechanism turning the hands is usually electrical, powered by small batteries.
