A cataraft is a rowed craft with two inflatable hulls. Most are intended for whitewater use, river running and rapids, as well as for use on lakes and other calmer waters.
ApplicationsThese vessels are suitable for an unudual type of rafting or for fishing. Certain models are designed for rescue teams operating in remote areas. The pontoons can be inflated rapidly from scuba tanks or an inflater.
TechnologiesThe two pontoons are joined by a platform, often a simple structure of metal tubes. Bow and stern are elevated to facilitate riding over waves and through rapids. The pontoons are usually of Hypalon® or neoprene. The platform has seats for one or two people, sometimes more, and is designed to carry camping gear. Some models can be equipped with an outboard motor.
