A boat propeller shaft is a solid metal cylinder which transmits the engine's torque to the propeller. Those offered on NauticExpo are designed for use on recreational/pleasure powerboats.
ApplicationsPropeller shafts are found on all types of power craft with inboard engines and a sternpost.
TechnologiesThe solid shaft is generally made of stainless steel machined for this purpose. The shaft narrows toward one end, which is threaded and configured to receive the propeller, held by a cotter pin or key. The other end is firmly inserted into the coupling flange at the gearbox.
The shaft passes through the stern tube via the stuffing box, which can be of several types: rotating seal, traditional, graphite or stainless steel band coupler, among others. A rubber bearing ensures proper shaft alignment aft of the stern tube. Some shafts are furnished with all the necessary fittings.
Choice will depend on shaft diameter, which must match that of the gearbox exit, the stern tube and/or the rubber bearing. The shaft must be long enough to reach from the coupling flange to the propeller. Propeller type and mounting system also should be considered.
