A boat ice chest, or cooler is a well-insulated portable box for keeping food and drink cold.
ApplicationsThis gear is ideal aboard small boats whose size, layout or lack of adequate electrical system prevents the installation of a refrigerator.
TechnologiesThese well-insulated containers have a seal or gasket around the closure. They are filled with ice or previously-frozen cold packs to chill the contents. Electric models have a small refrigerating unit which keeps the temperature around 6° C (42.8° F). Some boat seats have a built-in ice chest, while independent units can be wheeled, have carrying straps or other features.
How to chooseChoice will depend on size and versatility. Too big a cooler will be heavier and will warm more rapidly. However, if it is too small, its capacity may be insufficient. An ice chest also can be used for a variety of non-nautical activities such as hiking and camping. The range of intended uses should be considered. An electric model requires on-board power with a cigarette lighter-type or other suitable connection. Ordinary coolers should have a drain plug to remove the ice-melt water.
