The Wärtsilä RT-flex84T and RTA84T low-speed marine diesel engines are custom designed for the economical propulsion of very large crude oil tankers (VLCCs and ULCCs) of up to 300,000 dwt.
The parameters of the Wärtsilä RTA84T are based on the needs of VLCC newbuildings. For example, a VLCC of 285,000 dwt needs an average installed power of around 27,000 kW for a service speed of 15.5 knots.
The standard selected propeller speed of some 70 to 79 rpm, is a direct result of aiming for an ‘optimum propulsion’ installation within the widely accepted MARPOL recommendations for the selection of propeller diameters.
