Trawl and seine sensor (wireless)
Notus Electronics

Notus Electronics Ltd (Notus) based in Canada has released a new Door Metrics Sensor. The sensor has been in development for over a year. At sea testing was completed on the Danish twin rigger Ida Camilla.

The Door Metrics Sensor integrates with the current Notus Trawlmaster wireless net monitoring system. This single sensor can monitor heel angle, pitch angle, doorspread (in conjunction with a slave), and trawl wire length.

The most critical angle measured is the heel angle of the door. This part of the sensor answers many of the questions skippers have about doors: are the doors rigged correctly, do I have the right scope of wire out, has the door fallen over, etc.? This angle sensor is especially important considering the more efficient doors being developed by door manufacturers. The angle sensor assures an easier setup and operation of these new doors.

Notus also built its well known trawl wire measurement into the Door Metrics Sensor. This part of the sensor measures the distance between the vessel and the trawl door. This is one of the main advantages distinguishing Notus from other net monitoring systems.

The Door Metrics Sensor also offers door master capabilities. When a slave is installed on the opposite door, doorspread is provided (two spreads on a twin trawl). Doorspread is a critical piece of information to ensure the trawl is operating correctly. It has a large impact on fuel consumption when fishing in heavy currents as the optimal spread can be maintained on the gear.
