(3D molded) North Sails Sailmaking
3DL
Lighter and stronger. In 1994 North Sails introduced a revolutionary new technology to sailmaking called 3DL (three dimensional laminate). Instead of assembling flat panels (2D) with curved edges to make a sail, the 3DL process molds the entire sail in one piece without any seams. Compared to a panelled sail, a 3DL sail of the same weight will stretch less, have more effective wind range and will retain its molded shape longer. Ever since their introduction, 3DL sails have dominated the Grand Prix scene and have been used by both finalists in the America's Cup of 1995 and 2000.
