Oil Spill Detection
The Miros oil spill detection (OSD) system utilizes advanced image processing algorithms for earliest possible detection of oil spills.
Hence the extent of the pollution may be limited and the efficiency in clean-up operations increased to reduce the environmental consequences of oil spills. OSD has the ability to detect, and track, oil spills in complete darkness enabling 24 hours recovery operations.
The technology
OSD is an add-on to the Miros WAVEX system, a system which collects digitized sea surface images from standard marine X-band radars and estimates directional wave spectra and the sea surface current. OSD is based on the fact that areas covered by oil will reflect less microwave power due to dampening of the sea surface capillary waves. Areas containing oil will be shown as dark areas in the radar sea surface images.
