Ships winches are composed of a motor and one or several drums which take up ramp cables, mooring and other lines. Those offered on NauticExpo are intended for use on merchant ships and other commercial or work vessels.
ApplicationsThese devices are used primarily for tensioning mooring lines, winding up and storing cable and line, operating davits and RoRo ship ramps. They also can be used to ensure that hold cargo is securely lashed.
TechnologiesA diesel, electric or hydraulic motor rotates one or two drums which take up the lines or cables. The latter can simultaneously handle two lines or cables. Most are equipped with a braking systems to prevent unintentional unwinding.
Rotation speed is adjustable and a majority have a system for maintaining constant tension. They are made of treated steel and are protected by marine paint to prevent corrosion. Some have automatic lubrication systems. Manual models can be used where only moderate tension is required.
Selection will depend on the nature of the line or cable, maximum required tension and whether the winch will be used primarily for mooring, take-up and storage, cargo lashing, ramp operations or another activity. Other factors include the maximum length of cable to be handled and the choice of hydraulic, diesel or electric power.
